Medical Schools in DC

In the US, the traditional medical school curriculum lasts for four years. During their first two years, med students study human anatomy and basic medical science, then go on to acquire clinical skills through rotations in several areas of specialization. Students may be drawn to study medicine in Washington D.C, because it is home to 16 medical centers and hospitals and within a few miles of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.

    • Established in 1851, Georgetown University School of Medicine (SOM) is part of the Georgetown Medical Center, which encompasses the 609-bed Georgetown University Hospital, Washington Hospital Center and nine affiliated federal and community medical centers in the Washington metropolitan area. Georgetown SOM accepts about 200 students per year and is highly competitive, accepting roughly 4 percent of all applicants. The traditional four-year curriculum includes basic science courses, laboratory work, clinical clerkships, multidisciplinary courses and a range of electives in specialized medical areas. The majority of its graduates are accepted to their first choice of residency.

    George Washington Medical School

    • The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences was established in 1824 and has a medical class with about 700 students. It offers a four-year, semi-traditional program that includes course work and labs, as well as Practice of Medicine courses in a student's first two years, which introduces students to a clinical setting earlier than most medical school programs. In years three and four, students reintegrate their basic sciences coursework and labs with direct patient experience. The school is affiliated with The George Washington Medical Center, which includes the GWU Hospital, a Health Sciences Library and the School of Public Health and Health Services.

    Howard University College of Medicine

    • The Howard University College of Medicine (HUCM) is a school within Howard University. Established in 1868, it is the nation's oldest and largest African-American medical school in the country. HUCM has a medical school, as well as MD-Ph.D, Ph.D., and master's degrees in the health sciences. The four-year program follows a traditional structure with flexible options, like an extension to five years on some occasions. The college is a component of the Howard University Center for the Health Sciences, which includes a modern teaching building and Howard University Hospital. Students also get clinical training at other D.C. hospitals.
