Richmond is located in central Virginia and is home to many quality medical training facilities. At Virginia Commonwealth University is the School of Medicine, which offers graduate programs, M.D. programs and dual degree programs. The Richmond School of Health and Technology offers nursing, pharmacy technician and surgical technician training. The Bon Secours Health System offers a School of Nursing along with a medical imaging program and a pharmacy residency.     • The Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine receives over 5,700 applications per year and accepts only 184 students for its M.D. program and 8 M.D./Ph.D. students for each entering class. Applicants are reviewed based on academic performance, MCAT scores and an interview.

      VCU also has a School of Nursing, which offers both traditional and accelerated Bachelor of Science degrees as well as a Bachelor of Science for practicing registered nurses. The School of Nursing also offers a graduate program.

    Richmond School of Health and Technology

    • The Richmond School of Health and Training (RSHT) was founded in 1997 and offers a practical nursing diploma program with convenient day and evening classes. Practical nurses can work in surgical care, emergency nursing, nutrition counseling, patient care and geriatric care. RSHT also offers a medical assistant degree program that allows successful graduates to administer injections, check patient vital signs, run routine lab testing and assist with minor surgery. Medical assistants can work in urgent care clinics, doctors' offices and outpatient clinics. RSHT also offers surgical technician, medical billing and coding, pharmacy technician, massage therapist and radiological technician degree programs.

      The Richmond School of Health and Training has campuses in Richmond and Chester, Virginia. The school offers lifelong placement assistance to its qualified graduates.

    Bon Secours Health System

    • Bon Secours is part of the Richmond Health System and includes the College of Nursing, the School of Medical Imaging and a pharmacy residency program. The College of Nursing degree program offers day and evening classes, small clinical class sizes and lasts 30 months for full-time students. The program accepts students twice a year, in the fall and spring. When applying, you should hold either a high-school diploma or a GED, submit an application essay, SAT or ACT scores and three references.

      The School of Medical Imaging has graduated over 300 radiography students and offers an 18-month accredited radiography program that prepares students to work as diagnostic radiologic technicians. The program is full time and does not offer part time or evening classes. It has facilities in Richmond, Charlottesville and Tappahannock.

      The Bon Secours Pharmacy Residency is a postgraduate 12-month program designed to help new pharmacists gain experience in the pharmacy field. In this competitive program students receive training in patient care, medical safety and drug information. Applications are accepted once a year in January and the program runs from July through the following June. The residency offers a stipend and benefits such as health and dental insurance and vacation.
