Non-MCAT Medical Schools

For decades, the Medical College Admissions Test has been a necessary evil for those who dream of becoming a physician. However, some well-respected experts contend that questions on the MCAT are poor predictors of performance during clinical training and, later, as a physician. Studies have shown that the pre-admission interview is a more reliable predictor of grade point average during medical school. These findings have begun to impact admission requirements of some renowned medical schools.
  1. Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine

    • Those who live in rural or medically under-served areas of Texas and wish to pursue a career as a medical doctor are encouraged to apply to the Partner for Primary Care program at Texas A&M. Applicants must have a high school GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 and commit to attend one of Texas A&M's partner universities after graduation. The candidate must maintain a GPA of at least 3.25 throughout his or her freshman year. After graduation and on completion of residency, students must pledge to work as a physician in the rural or medically under-served area where he or she had primary residence during high school.

    Darthmouth Medical School

    • While Dartmouth Medical School---of the famed Ivy League Dartmouth University--- does not specifically require that prospective medical students take the MCAT and submit scores, it is strongly advised. They review all applications wherein students have a grade point average at or above the standard and have taken the required courses, the admissions page clearly states that those not taking the MCAT will be at a disadvantage. This does not mean they will not be considered, however.

    Faculty of Medicine-University of Ottawa

    • Students applying for admission to medical school at the University of Ottawa are not required to take the MCAT; however, this means that their grades in all courses will be reviewed much more closely. Candidates for admission are required to have taken certain prerequisite courses at the college level, but are not required to have completed a bachelor's degree prior to admission. In addition to careful scrutiny of grades, the admissions officers will interview selected candidates for suitability in the program.

    Northern Ontario School of Medicine

    • Northern Ontario School of Medicine does not require the MCAT as part of the application process. Academic performance is closely scrutinized, but non-academic considerations are also taken into account. For example, the school follows a mandate to give an advantage to aboriginal applicants, French Canadian applicants, and applicants from remote and rural areas of Ontario. Applicants must possess a four-year undergraduate degree and have a 3.0 grade point average.
