The University of Mississippi School of Medicine aims to educate Mississippi's future doctors, offering what its website calls a "comprehensive program of medical education, biomedical research and health care." LouAnn Woodward, Vice Dean of the School of Medicine, says the school also wants to help solve problems with current medical care, such as "access to care and the disparities of health status between rich and poor, black and white."
As a state university, the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Medicine gives "strong preference" to "applicants who are legal residents of Mississippi", according to its website, which notes that "in recent years, nonresidents have not been admitted." Residency is the initial evaluation for admittance, followed by cumulative grade point average and test scores on the Medical College Admission Test. Admission is fairly competitive, and successful applicants have high scores and high grades. With an annual tuition of $15,649 per year for 2010-2011 for Mississippi residents, the school is relatively inexpensive.
