List of the Top Architecture Schools

DesignIntelligence, a bi-monthly report developed by the Design Futures Council, creates an annual list of the top architecture degree programs in the United States. It is the only recognized ratings list for accredited degree programs. The rankings are based upon the results of a survey taken by industry practitioners and school officials. The primary factors contributing to the ranking are occupational readiness of graduates and the overall quality of the program. The following schools offer some of the highest-rated undergraduate architecture programs in the United States.
  1. Cornell University

    • Cornell University, located in Ithaca, New York, has one of the oldest and highest-rated architecture schools in the country. The Department of Architecture at Cornell offers a comprehensive degree program focusing on history, theory, technology and design. Cornell University offers students the opportunity to earn a professional bachelor's or master's degree in Architecture. Students also have the opportunity to study in Rome and New York City for one semester each. Other programs available include a Bachelor of Science in History of Architecture and the post-professional master's degree program.

    Syracuse University

    • Syracuse University in New York offers one of the most prominent architectural programs in the country. The curriculum focuses on the design studio sequence, where students will work alongside classmates and receive one-on-one instruction while gaining hands-on experience. Advanced-level architecture students will have the opportunity to spend a semester or summer studying at one of Syracuse's global campuses in New York City, London, or Florence. The Syracuse School of Architecture offers both undergraduate and graduate programs.

    California Polytechnic State University

    • Students at California Polytechnic State University have the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Architecture degree from its five-year accredited professional degree program. The program is lab-oriented and reflects a balance of technology and design. Students spend a lot of time in the studio as California Polytechnic encourages students to acquire knowledge through their learn-by-doing philosophy. The university also offers a graduate program for those wishing to pursue a Masters of Science in Architecture.

    Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

    • Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, located in Blacksburg, enables students to obtain a bachelor's, master's or doctorate in architecture. The structure of the five-year undergraduate program is split into two stages: foundation studies and professional studies. Foundation studies include the key elements of design and professional studies readies students for a career in architecture. Students also have opportunities for externships, field study and study abroad programs.

    University of Texas at Austin

    • Architecture students at the University of Texas have a wide range of degree programs to choose from. Students are able to choose from professional and pre-professional baccalaureate degree programs as well as dual degree programs that allow students to obtain a double professional degree in architecture. The program curriculum is designed-oriented and aims to prepare students for the demands and challenges of a professional career in architecture. The University of Texas also offers master's degree programs, including specialized programs for landscape architecture, urban design, community and regional planning, architectural history and preservation.
