Top Undergrad Architecture Schools

Many undergraduate architecture schools offer rigorous, five-year Bachelor of Architecture degrees that prepare students for careers in professional architecture. For 2010, "Architectural Record" ranks the top three undergraduate programs as Cornell University in New York, Syracuse University in New York and California Polytechnic State University in California. Students admitted to these schools study a mix of theory, design and technology.
  1. Cornell University

    • Located in upstate New York, Cornell University has the College of Architecture, Art & Planning where undergraduates can earn a Bachelor of Architecture degree in five years. Students complete 176 total credit hours and may also pursue a Bachelor of Science in Architecture in four years. Prospective students can expect to complete courses in topics such as technology, structures, history, theory and design. Students are encouraged to travel to New York City and Rome for semester-abroad programs. There are about 275 undergraduate students in the program and about 55 students graduate each year.

    Syracuse University

    • Also located in New York, Syracuse University operates the School of Architecture where undergraduates can earn the Bachelor of Architecture in five years. Each student will complete 162 credits in professional architecture, arts and sciences, and electives. Coursework includes structural design, theory and history of architecture. The school takes great pride in offering a lecture series that brings renowned architects to campus.

    California Polytechnic State University

    • Through its School of Architecture, California Polytechnic State University offers the Bachelor of Architecture degree for undergraduates. The bulk of the curriculum is focused on providing a balance of coursework in design and technology. Some students may wish to minor in several concentrations, including Construction Management, Architectural Engineering and Sustainable Environments, among others. Admission to the program is extremely competitive. Only 100 students are admitted each year from approximately 1,500 applicants.
