The Bishop of Aberdeen, also then Chancellor of Scotland, established the university in 1495. One of the first areas he created was the faculty of law. Thus, the Aberdeen Law School has a long tradition of scholarship. The Times Good University Guide and the Complete University Guide have also ranked Aberdeen Law School as one of the top law schools in the UK. The basic undergraduate degree takes three years and builds on Scottish law, which is different from the common law system of the English. The school also offers a Foreign Study Programme, which allows students to get credits for studying law abroad. Students may also complete a degree by part-time study, which takes five years to complete. Other offerings include master's degree programs, research degrees, a Diploma in Legal Practice and a Professional Competence Course.
