Students pursuing a master's degree in international studies focus on subjects such as conflict resolution, global public health or U.S. foreign policy. Completing a master's degree in international studies can prepare a student for a doctoral program or a career in public service or government.

    • University of Denver's international studies master's program requires students to earn 90 credits, which takes approximately two years to complete. In addition to core courses in international and comparative politics, students take 20 credits of concentrated study in subjects such as international political economy or political theory. A thesis is optional. Internships are also optional but recommended. Applicants submit transcripts, recommendation letters, a personal statement and resume. Graduates of the program often work for government agencies and nonprofit organizations.

    • The Master of International Studies (MIS) degree program at George Washington University is designed for students who hold master's degrees in subjects such as political science or history. Participants in the 28-credit program select a concentration of study in global issues or regional studies after completing core courses in political science, economics and history.
