The University of Chicago's Department of Sociology provides a competitive graduate program with only 15 students accepted out of 200 applicants. While it is designed for students to earn a master's degree on the way to earning their Ph.D., they have the option to only gain their M.A. if they are not ready to commit to the program. The M.A. is a one-year interdisciplinary program that allows students to choose courses within the social sciences, so their curriculum is not restricted. The department offers job placement assistance for its graduates.
