Wilderness Certification Programs

Wilderness certification programs are offered by colleges, medical schools and companies specializing in wilderness programs. Students may take courses and become certified in wilderness first aid, survival skills, tracking and permaculture. Permaculture design is the design of agricultural-based human settlements which focus on food, energy, shelter and the building of self-sustainable infrastructures. Students completing an 80-hour wilderness medicine program may become a certified Wilderness First Responder (WFR).
  1. Alderleaf Wilderness College

    • Alderleaf Wilderness College offers courses in wilderness survival, permaculture, wilderness tracking, wild edible and medicinal plants, naturalist skills and ecology. Alderleaf Wilderness College offers an eight-week certificate programs in permaculture. Tuition in 2010 for the Permaculture Design Certificate program was $2400. To earn a certificate in permaculture design, students complete course work in permaculture ethics; micro-climate analysis; organic food gardening; building with natural materials; animal husbandry; mushroom foraging and propagation; forest stewardship and habitat restoration; rainwater harvesting and water retention; sustainable resources and alternative energy; pond management and aquaculture; plant propagation and grafting; and ecology. Alderleaf Wilderness College offers a 32-week wilderness certification program which teaches wilderness survival skills, permaculture, ethnobotany, wildlife tracking, and outdoor leadership. Students completing the wilderness certificate program earn a certificate of completion in Wilderness Education and Ecology as well as in Permaculture Design and in Track and Sign Evaluation. In 2010, tuition for the Wilderness Certification program was $8500. Scholarships and payment plans are available for qualifying students in the Alderleaf Wilderness certification program.

    • California State University, Long Beach offers an 80-hour Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Certification program. Financial aid available to qualifying students includes scholarships, grants, loans and work-study programs. California State University also offers payment plan options for qualifying students.

    The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University

    • The College of Saint Benedict for women and Saint John's University for men (CSBSJU) are private, Catholic liberal arts colleges in Minnesota that share one academic program. Students attend classes together on both campuses. CSBSJU offers two certificate programs in wilderness medicine. The Wilderness First Aid certificate program is a 20-hour program focusing on wilderness first aid which is completed in two to three days. The tuition cost of the 20 credit-hour wilderness first aid certificate program is $150 for community members and $180 for non-community members. CSBSJU offers an 80-hour wilderness medicine certificate program. Students completing the 80-hour wilderness medicine program may become a certified Wilderness First Responder (WFR). In 2010, tuition for the 80 credit-hour wilderness medicine program for first responders was $400 for community members and $600 for non-community members.

    Bellevue College

    • Bellevue College offers a wilderness skill certificate program. To earn the certificate, students must complete 18 credit-hours of coursework in wellness, wilderness first aid, beginning rock climbing, backpacking, snowshoeing, outdoor leadership, sea kayaking and navigation, adventure trip planning and risk management, and Northwest fitness exploration. Students may apply the 18 credit-hours of wilderness skills coursework to an Associate in Arts and Sciences Transfer Degree program. Financial aid available to qualifying students includes scholarships, grants, loans and work-study programs.
