The American University in Washington, D.C. offers TESOL certification through its master's international program. The program is four semesters in length, with an additional 27 months of service in the Peace Corps. Course offerings include principles of linguistics, English language teaching I and II, second language acquisition, and cultural issues in the ESL/EFL classroom. Students must already have an earned a bachelor's degree to enter the program, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Tuition begins at $1,178 per credit hour, with some financial aid available and merit-based scholarships. Programs are offered in-class, as well as online for a hybrid approach. Peace Corps internships are also available.

Columbia International University is a private religious school. Students must have existing knowledge of biblical theology for program admission, and must demonstrate evidence of Christian conversion and character. The TESOL certification program involves 31 hours of coursework, and 100 hours of teaching practice. Courses include theoretical foundations of language learning, techniques of TEFL, and global mission and the local church with intercultural studies elective. Students gain hands-on, practical experience through 100 hours of classroom teaching experience through an internship that may be fulfilled overseas. Huntington University in Indiana offers TESOL certification through a 15 credit hour program that includes a practicum that can be fulfilled overseas. Courses are three credits each and completed over two years. Practicums can be completed in the summer at one of many three-week intensive English programs overseas where students take classes, complete assignments, conduct interviews, research, plan lessons and complete final projects. Courses include teaching reading and writing, instructional methods for TESOL/ENL, curriculum development for TESOL/ENL, and methodologies of TESOL. Anyone can take the coursework leading to certification at Huntington, including undergraduate or graduate students, public school teachers seeking additional certification for the state of Indiana, or laypersons who want TESOL certification. Tuition begins at $355 per credit hour, with a discount for senior citizens.
