Wellness Certification Programs

Health professionals pursue additional certifications to offer specialized services to patients. A certified wellness specialist helps people make better choices regarding diet, exercise and lifestyle. According to The American College of Wellness, ideal candidates for wellness certification programs include health educators, fitness professionals, any professional working with overweight or obese clients, clergy members, nutrition professionals, physicians and nurses, and worksite health and wellness promoters. Several programs are available. Certification candidates should research which one best suits their professional goals and schedule.
  1. Certified Wellness Specialist (CWS)

    • The American College of Wellness offers CWS certification based on professional achievement. Candidates must complete an application and prove they have earned a minimum of 250 experience points (based on the college's criteria) for promoting health and wellness. Points are earned through professional contributions to the health and wellness of patients, students or community members. A fee is associated with certification. This program is suitable for candidates with significant experience providing health-related services; however, new high school or college graduates or students looking for a career change will need a more instruction-based program before applying for this certification.

    Certified Wellness Consultant (CWC)

    • CWC certification is also offered by The American College of Wellness and is specific to wellness education rather than practice, which differentiates it from the CWS designation. To be eligible for this certification, candidates must complete a minimum of 150 professional experience points (based on the college's criteria) for educating patients, students or community members. Professional points must be earned in a health and wellness field. A fee is associated with this certification. This program is also suitable for candidates with significant experience providing health-related education; however, new high school or college graduates or students looking for a career change will need a more instruction-based program.

The Life Dynamix Certified Wellness Specialist (L.C.W.S.)

    • The Life Dynamix program is a distance learning program designed to prepare students to help others "access healthy energies." To complete this program, candidates must score 85 percent or better on a comprehensive exam, provide written responses to wellness questions asked by Life Dynamix community members, and exhibit an adequate level of wellness knowledge during a telephone interview. This program is available for students with little or no experience or education in the health field. Students must possess a high school diploma to enroll.

    Online and Campus Programs

    • Many local and national colleges and universities offer programs for certification in the health industry. Some popular programs include nutrition and wellness specialist, natural health consultant and health educator. Professionals in each of these fields may be qualified to work in fitness centers, healthcare provider offices, and in corporations or businesses as wellness consultants. Most of these programs require little to no prior health education or experience.
