Doctoral Programs in Wellness

Wellness has moved from the margins of health practice to the mainstream. Many traditional practitioners have incorporated techniques such as acupuncture into their repertoire of medical care. In response to growing awareness of the connection between mind and body, training programs and educational institutions have begun to offer specialized training in wellness, including doctoral level programs.
  1. Online Doctoral Wellness Programs

    • Walden University Online offers the PhD in Health Services-Community Health Promotion and Education. This specialized degree prepares students to work with communities, government agencies, work sites and clinics and companies to plan, administer and evaluate health and education programs.

      The Doctor of Psychology, Health and Wellness Psychology Specialization offered by the University of the Rockies is designed to prepare students to develop workplace wellness strategies. Graduates are prepared to work with corporations and organizations to help their employees establish healthy work/life balance. Both institutions are members of the North Central Association and are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association.

    Arizona State University

    • Arizona State University College of Nursing and Health Innovation offers the Interdisciplinary Doctorate (PhD) in Physical Activity, Nutrition and Wellness. This program draws from several academic departments to integrate health and nutrition research in the areas of increased quality of life, reduction of disease risk and an enhanced sense of general well being. As with all academic doctoral programs, students produce a dissertation that represents a significant body of original scholarly work.

    Bastyr University

    • Bastyr University, located near Seattle, Washington, offers the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Doctoral Program (DAOM) and the Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degrees. The Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine program trains students to operate at the crossroads between traditional Western medicine and Eastern traditions, with an emphasis on oncology and pain management. The curriculum has been approved by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and regionally accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

      The Naturopathic Medicine Degree Program (ND) at Bastyr University has been recognized by the "Princeton Review" as one of the 168 best medical programs in the country. The curriculum is fully accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME). Graduates are fully eligible to sit for the Naturopathic Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), and those who pass the exams may be licensed to practice as NDs. The program allows students to take courses outside the discipline in related areas such as nutrition, health psychology and exercise science. A dual degree program in acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ND/AOM) as well as a certification option for naturopathic midwifery also are available.
