Creative Writing Doctoral Programs

Doctorates in creative writing can sharpen your writing skills or prepare you for a career in publishing, editing or teaching. The majority of doctoral programs in creative writing involve courses in literature, intensive writing workshops with a faculty of published creative writers and the completion of a dissertation, often in the form of a novel, poetry or short story collection, play or work of creative nonfiction.

    • Oklahoma State University has offered a creative writing program since 1975. Students in OSU's doctoral program can choose a concentration in poetry or fiction writing. For their dissertations, students must submit an original creative work, such as a short story or poetry collection, with a critical introduction.

    • The University of Houston's Ph.D. program in creative writing was ranked one of the top five in the U.S. by "The Atlantic."     • If you are looking to study overseas, there is a Ph.D. program in creative writing at Bath Spa University in the U.K. The program's teaching staff includes literary scholars and published writers with expertise in prose, poetry, fiction, narrative nonfiction and script-writing.
