The University of Miami's Department of English has a two-year graduate program in fiction writing or poetry. Students who complete the program are awarded a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. According to the department's website, "The primary aim of the program is to nurture the individual's writing talent; the secondary aim is to prepare students for careers in writing and teaching." The university also allows undergraduates to major in English with a concentration in creative writing.

The creative writing program at the University of Florida got its start in 1948, and is one of the oldest in the United States. The US News & World Report has ranked the university's creative writing program as one of the top twenty in the country. Those who complete the program are awarded a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. Of potential applicants, the university's website says, "We look for writers whose work is suited to the strengths and interests of our particular faculty. Often the students showing us workable potential are not the most accomplished writers in the applicant pool, and those who are most accomplished may not be so in ways that we can address." The Atlantic magazine named Florida State University's graduate program in creative writing one of the ten best in the United States. The Atlantic also named the university's PhD program in creative writing one of the five best. According to the university's website: "Our faculty includes winners of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, as well as professors who are not only dedicated to the craft of writing but who are also widely known as teachers of the craft."
