Harvard University's psychology department formed in the late 1800s with William James as an early scholar in the field. The department now contains five primary research areas, including cognition, brain and behavior, developmental psychology, clinical science, social psychology and organizational behavior. Undergraduate psychology majors can follow a general track, or a specialized track in mind, brain and behavior or social and cognitive neuroscience.
The graduate program enrolls about 65 students at a time. Graduate students work toward a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in clinical science or in social psychology, cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, behavioral neuroscience and perception. The department faculty conducts research and scholarship in more than 25 specialized fields, including unconscious processes, visual cognition, learning and memory, judgment and decision-making, executive control, attitudes, animal learning and emotion. In 2009, Harvard University tied for third in "U.S. News & World Report" magazine's ranking of psychology programs.
