A doctorate degree in sports psychology can lead to a career in research or counseling. Sports psychologists conduct research into improving the performance of athletes through mental training. In addition to research, these psychology professionals may also work with athletes who need counseling for various reasons, including the improvement of exercise performance.     • Oregon State University offers a doctorate in exercise and sports psychology through its Department of Nutrition and Exercise Sciences. This research-oriented program emphasizes the social psychological aspects of exercise psychology. The doctoral degree program lasts approximately four years. The basic approach of the department is the use of a "theory-to-practice" method that allows students to attempt to apply their own theories to practical situations. The program requires 30 credit hours of coursework. Of these, 12 credit hours comprise a research core that includes courses in measurement in human movement and research in human movement.
