Doctorate in Counseling Programs

At least 140 universities in the United States offer doctoral programs in counseling, which prepare students to become therapists, researchers, academics, school administrators, teacher-trainers, leaders in mental health clinics and vocational centers or other types of mental-health providers or community leaders. Although the programs might have different names, like "Counseling Psychology," "School Counseling," or "Family Therapy" degrees, for example, all require a combination of research, course work and clinical practice.

    • SUNY Albany's School of Education offers a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. The program provides education both in scientist-practitioner training as a scientific discipline and in counseling psychology for professional specialization. The program is full-time and requires at least 76 credits (which includes courses, practica and an APA-accredited 2,000-hour internship).

    Seton Hall University

    • Located 14 miles from New York City, Seton Hall University offers a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology through its School of Education and Human Services. The department places an emphasis on multicultural sensitivity and offers training in supervision. The program also "provides for a nine-credit specialization," such as multicultural studies, pediatric psychology, marriage therapy or neuropsychology. In July and January, the program offers international training in Trinidad.

    University of Miami

    • The doctoral program in counseling psychology at the University of Miami typically takes three years for those who already have a master's in the subject, or four years for those who do not. The program offers opportunities for training in subject areas like families, health psychology and multicultural perspectives, and it is based on the model of scientist-practitioners.
