Doctorate Programs in Archaeology

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most employers prefer their archaeologist to have a doctoral degree in an archaeology specialty such as curation in natural history or science museums. That said, approximately 39 percent of archaeologists are employed in these areas. Numerous universities offer doctorate programs in archaeology in the U.S. today; many of which offer course work in museum studies.
  1. Columbia University

    • Columbia University in New York City offers students the opportunity to receive a Doctorate in Archaeology from their Art History and Archaeology department. Graduate students in archaeology at Columbia University are privy to a network of archaeologists, archaeological sites, and the museum collection from The Museum of the City of New York. Courses are taken from a number of subjects such as pre-Columbian, medieval, and Mediterranean. Archaeology at the university is taught as a multidisciplinary field, with eight faculty members contributing from different departments, like social sciences, natural sciences, and humanities. Some courses include: ethno-archaeology, archaeology and theory, archaeological approaches to time, and techniques in archaeology.

    University of California

    • University of California in Berkeley offers a doctorate program in Classical Archaeology. One major goal of the program is to make sure students have a solid background in Greek and Latin, and are competent in Greek and Roman archaeology fieldwork, as well as a comprehensive understanding of historical methods. Twelve units in Classical Archaeology or Art History are required for Berkeley's PhD in Classical Archaeology, six of which are required for the graduate research seminar courses. Prior to graduating, students must also satisfied two modern language requirements; German and either French or Italian.

    Washington State University

    • According to the Washington State University catalog, the doctorate program in archaeology focuses on "developing professional archaeologists" and is geared toward a "sound theoretical and methodological background". The Doctorate in Archaeology program is offered through the Department of Anthropology. Core course requirements for the degree include; fundamentals of cultural anthropology, archaeological method and theory, quantitative methods in anthropology, and evolutionary method and theory in anthropology and archaeology. Doctorate program candidates are expected to already have a general anthropology foundation, so rather than focus on general anthropology, the PhD program at Washington State University emphasis is primarily on archaeology.
