Clark Atlanta University, a predominantly African-American university formed in 1988 by the merger of Clark College and Atlanta University, offers a Ph.D. in political science. International Politics is one of the program's fields of study. Applicants to the Ph.D. political science program must already have a masters' degree. They must also have strong research skills demonstrated by foreign language reading competency or statistical analysis coursework. Ph.D. candidates must complete at least 30 graduate semester hours, a dissertation, and an oral dissertation defense.

Georgia Tech offers a Ph.D. in International Affairs, Science and Technology (IAST) through the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs and is the only major technology institution to do so. The Nunn School accepts three to five Ph.D. candidates each year. The Graduate Review Committee bases admission decisions on the applicant's personal statement, recommendation letters, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, foreign language competency, a writing sample, and relevant coursework and work experience. Ph.D. candidates may enter the international affairs program with or without a master's degree.

The political science Ph.D. degree involves study in five fields including: government and politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and theories and methods of political inquiry. The Emory University Ph.D. in Political Science program does not have a foreign language requirement.
