One university offering a doctoral degree in the field of international development is Johns Hopkins University. The university's School of Advanced International Studies offers a doctoral program that is interdisciplinary in its emphases and prepares students for the field of international development by providing a broad overview of the the field. At the same time, students are able to focus on their own particular areas of emphasis in order to focus their research.
The program offers a broad range of specialization fields. Some of these include American foreign policy, European studies, Asian studies, international relations, conflict management and global theory and history. The curriculum covers areas such as development strategies, monitoring and evaluation of development projects, social foundations of development, delivering development assistance and comparative public management.

Tulane University also offers a PhD in International Development through the Payson Center for International Development. Like the Johns Hopkins program, the Tulane program is interdisciplinary in its emphases and provides students with a strong theoretical background in the field while emphasizing applied skills as well.
The doctoral program requires 48 hours for completion. Of these, 21 hours must come from core courses in areas such as applied economic analysis, quantitative analysis, research methods, technology application, information technology for development, sustainable human development and international political and economic relations.
Tulane offers students flexibility in its studies by offering some of these courses through online distance education courses.

A third option for a PhD in international development is the program at the George Washington University Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Administration. The primary emphasis of the GWU program is international development administration. As such, core courses must be taken in the areas of international development policy and administration, management processes and tools and non-governmental organization (NGO) management. Courses in economic are also a part of the requirement for the degree.
Students must take three courses in economic development. In addition to these required courses, students can choose from a number of elective courses in areas such as global governance, the anthropology of development, international institutions, democracy and democratization, external development financing and international health and development.
