PhD Public Health Programs

Public health Ph.D. programs prepare students for positions of leadership in the public health industry, which is concerned with the detection, prevention and treatment of disease, especially in cases where diseases can spread to epidemic levels. Public health leaders must be equipped to implement plans in such instances. A Ph.D in public health familiarizes students with these potential situations and prepares them to act accordingly.

Although not internationally renowned in the same way as Johns Hopkins or Harvard University, SDSU offers a highly competitive Ph.D. program in the field of public health. The three primary concentrations within the program include global health, health behavior and epidemiology. SDSU works in a cooperative relationship with the University of California at San Diego to offer students this program and the concentrations within the program. Courses in epidemiology, for instance, are heavily dependent upon the medical expertise of UCSD medical school faculty members, while SDSU faculty members are largely responsible for the course offerings emphasizing administrative and management aspects of the public health industry.
