The Linguistics program at the University of Georgia is interdisciplinary and draws on faculty from a number of departments within the university, including Comparative Literature, Romance Languages and Germanic and Slavic Languages. Students in the program have the option to focus on one of four different areas Second Language Acquisition, Formal Linguistics, Historical Linguistics, and Language Variation/Sociolinguistics, each of which has its own focus and requirements. The program offers a number of teaching assistantships for new students, primarily teaching English composition and elementary foreign language instruction.

Students in the Linguistics doctoral problem at the State University of New York at Buffalo have the opportunity to focus on a number of specific areas within the field. Particular areas of strength in the department include syntactic and semantic typology, semantics, field-based documentation, and psycholinguistics. The Ph.D. program in Linguistics as the University of Florida offers training in a number of areas, both old and new. Although original areas of emphasis included Descriptive Linguistics, Linguistic Theory and Experimental Phonetics, a number of new areas of emphasis have been added, such as Discourse Analysis, Semantics and Second Language Acquisition.
