The Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University is one of the most highly-ranked music schools in the nation. Three fields of study are offered in which students can earn a doctor of philosophy: music education, music theory and musicology. Degree requirements include the completion of 90 credit hours and a dissertation comprised of original research.
While on campus, students have access to the Cook Music Library, a large and technologically advanced facility. Graduates of the program typically go on to careers in scholarly writing, research and college teaching.

The music department at Yale University in Connecticut offers a Ph.D. program with concentrations in either music history or music theory. The program is full time and students are expected to be in residence at the school for a three-year minimum.
An average of 30 students are enrolled each year in various stages of degree completion. Those in the program have access to the Gilmore Music Library, Collection of Musical Instruments, Historical Sound Recordings Collection and the archives of the American Music Institute. In order to graduate, students must demonstrate proficiency in two foreign languages: German and either Italian or French.

The Eastman School of Music, which is part of the University of Rochester, offers a Ph.D. with majors in composition, music education, music theory and music education. Students entering the composition or music education major usually have a master's degree in the field. Musicology and theory majors can be admitted with only a bachelor's degree.
In order to graduate, students must complete 90 credit hours, demonstrate foreign language proficiency and successfully defend a dissertation. Full-time residence is required for a minimum of one year.
