The University of Iowa offers both Master of Arts and doctorate degrees in the psychology of sport and physical activity. The masters program offers a choice of further specialization in sport psychology or health promotion, with coursework in research methods, epidemiology, health and physical activity, nutrition, health interventions, and sport psychology. The doctoral program requires advanced coursework in research methods, social psychology, health behavior, epidemiology, sport psychology, counseling, community health and statistics, in addition to a formal dissertation.

The former requires advanced coursework in psychology and sport counseling, in addition to a thesis, an exam and 50 hours of counseling practice. The Department of Kinesiology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro offers both a master of science and a doctorate in sport and exercise psychology. Both programs combine theory, research and practical training in the cognitive, and physiological and psycho-social aspects of sport and exercise. Graduate students may choose to complete a thesis or additional coursework in sport and society, motor development, and the psychological factors influencing sport and exercise behaviors. Doctoral students can further concentrate their studies in neuromechanics, physiology or exercise psychology. Additional coursework in research methods and a formal dissertation are required.
