Psychology Graduate Degree Programs

A graduate degree is valuable for individuals interested in working in the field of psychology. According to Rider University, while some employers will hire individuals with only a bachelor's degree, most positions in the field require at least a master's degree and in many cases a doctoral degree in psychology. Psychology offers many specialty areas of study at the graduate level.
  1. Clinical Psychology

    • Clinical psychology programs prepare students to work in a clinical situation in which they are providing psychological treatment to individuals. In addition to psychology training, students take classes in legal and ethical issues affecting clinical psychology. Universities such as Pacifica University in Carpinteria, California, offer PhD programs in clinical psychology. Applicants to Pacifica University are expected to have a master's degree in psychology or a bachelor's degree in psychology with at least two years of psychology work experience.     Developmental Psychology

    • Developmental psychology focuses on studying how behavior patterns develop in individuals from infancy to adolescence. Some areas of study include the relationships between peers and how people acquire language. Many universities, including the University of California, Los Angeles, offer PhD programs in developmental psychology. Admissions decisions to the UCLA graduate psychology program are based upon Grade Point Averages, GRE test scores and research experience.

    Social Psychology

    • Social psychology at its most basic level is the study of interactions between people. Several universities including Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, offer graduate degrees in social psychology. At Yale, students study the relationship between and individuals beliefs, motivations and attitudes, and how people behave in social situations such as communication and decision making. To be considered for admission, students must take the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE Aptitude Test and submit previous research experience and transcripts of undergraduate and graduate coursework completed.

    Forensic Psychology

    • When psychology is applied to the legal field, this is referred to as forensic psychology. A graduate degree in forensic psychology allows an individual to obtain employment in correctional or psychiatric facilities or to provide psychological evaluations of suspects and victims in legal cases. Schools such as the Chicago School which has locations in Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington, DC, offer a master's or a PsyD degree in forensic psychology. Applicants to the PsyD program are expected to take the GRE exam, answer essay questions and have completed on course in statistics and one in abnormal psychology. Applicants to the master's degree program must submit answers to essay questions and have completed one course each in psychology, research methods and statistics.
