      Naropa University was founded by the radical Tibetan Buddhist monk Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche in 1974 in an effort to combine consciousness studies with the traditional Western educational system. Naropa offers a master of arts in transpersonal psychology. The low-residency 36-credit program takes most students two years to complete. The coursework is broken up into online courses and two summer intensives of one week each. If you are seeking licensure, consider Naropa's three-year master of arts in transpersonal counseling psychology program. Although the program is not offered online, the school offers flexible weekend, evening and summer courses. Tuition is $32,888 for the two-year program and $53,662 for the three-year licensure program.

    • The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (ITP) in Palo Alto, California offers five graduate degree options in transpersonal psychology. The 45-credit master of arts (MA) in transpersonal psychology is offered in online and residential formats for students who want to learn the philosophy behind transpersonal psychology but are not seeking clinical licensure. The residential MA in counseling psychology prepares students for licensure to practice in California. The program can be completed in three years by taking evening courses and two years with daytime courses. In addition, ITP offers a residential Ph.D. in transpersonal psychology and a Psy.D. in clinical psychology.
