The program is mentor-student based; each student chooses one or more faculty members whose interest is in clinical child psychology. These mentors guide the student in their doctoral pursuit by designing coursework and training to meet the student’s educational needs and career aspirations. Students develop skills and attain knowledge to function in research, academic, clinical and community psychological settings. Students will spend educational training time in the Psychological Services and Training Center located on the university’s campus.

West Virginia University offers a doctoral program in clinical child psychology that typically takes four to five years to complete. The program is designed to ensure students are competent in conducting research and in clinical consulting, assessment and intervention. Program coursework includes child behavior modification, biological aspects of behavior, child development, ethics, legal and professional issues, social behavior, and statistics and experiment design. Students will also attend special topic seminars in subjects such as developmental psychopathology of anxiety and parent child interaction therapy. The program requires students to begin active research in the first semester and continue it throughout the program, to complete 18 clinical practicum hours, and to complete a master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation.
