The California School of Professional Psychology offers a respecialization program for psychologists with doctorates in other areas that want to specialize in clinical psychology. The program is offered in the Fresno, San Diego and San Francisco campuses.
The program covers general theory, personality, psychopathology, assessment and psychotherapeutic techniques. Practical training range between 15 to 24 hours per week to meet specific licensing standard regulations from the California Board of Psychology and the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC).
Students following the Respecialization program must contact the Board of Psychology to register in order for the training hours to be counted toward licensure and to verify their doctoral degree meets the requirements of the Board of Psychology.
Hofstra University is situated in Hempstead, Long Island, on a with 240-acre campus. This university offers small classes averaging 23 students, which encourages a learning atmosphere and promotes interaction with faculty and students.
The Respecialization program is offered to the psychologist holding a doctorate in another area within the field of psychology and who wants to specialize. The program for this course of study meets the APA guidelines, which are required for psychologists to change their area of specialty or add an additional area of specialization. Admission requirements are a doctorate in psychology, transcripts, personal declaration, reference letters and previous graduating.
When the applicant begins the program, the director and the applicant will review transcripts to determine which courses are required.
Even though the program is based on clinical work, there are situations when another area of study needs to be completed. If the applicant did clinical work prior to enrolling in the program, it will be discussed with the faculty if the prior content is the same. The director will draw a contract of the requirements needed, which will be signed by the director and applicant. While the courses will be almost entirely clinical, in some cases a another area may need to be finished and the director will advise this during the interview.
The Respecialization Program in Clinical Psychology is for persons with a doctorate from an accredited University who want to change their career path to practice clinical psychology. After completing the program requirements, applicants are awarded a Certificate of Clinical Respecialization and a period of six years is given for completion.
To become licensed as a clinical psychologist, trainees must complete a clinical internship, which requires a post-doctorate training and additional supervised clinical hours. If your interested in taking the examination in another state, there are special requirements. Interested candidates must submit a statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation, a curriculum vitae, transcript and an application fee. Evaluation is conducted by the clinical psychology faculty to ensure all requirements are met.
