The University of Western Ontario (UWO) offers a graduate level clinical psychology program that is based on the "scientist-practitioner" model. In this model, students learn that research and clinical practice go hand-in-hand. Clinical practice and clinical research are mutually reinforcing aspects of clinical psychology. Despite this interrelationship, UWO emphasizes the research aspect of clinical psychology over and above clinical practice. The university offers a sequential Master of Science and Ph.D. program in which the student receives the master's degree en route to the Ph.D. Research specialties offered at UWO include areas such as pediatric sleep problems, health psychology, cognitive deficit in schizophrenia, the relationship between psychopathology and personality characteristics and violent crime and human aggression.

Like the program at UWO, McGill University also emphasizes the study of clinical psychology as the combination of clinical practice and advanced research. Emphasis is primarily upon research in the field. McGill admits students directly to its Ph.D. program from the bachelor's degree level. It is generally recognized that the student will receive the master's degree on the way to achieving a doctorate. Students at McGill have the opportunity to work with all faculty members within the department, rather than simply working alongside one who supervises their research. Students complete coursework in three years before moving on to the dissertation. Areas of study covered by the program include psychological theory, psychopathology, diagnostic methods, psychotherapy and behavior change and biological methods in clinical psychology.

The University of Toronto is one of Canada's best-regarded universities. The university differs from others in its approach to clinical psychology, emphasizing school and clinical child psychology as the main concern of its clinical psychology program. Whereas other programs emphasize research, the University of Toronto places more emphasis on the clinical experience of its students. Students work with clinical subjects of all ages, both children and families, at its counseling and educational center. The university offers both a master's degree and a Ph.D. At the master's level, students study foundational courses in ethics, research, learning problems, psychopathology and the affective and cognitive bases of behavior. At the doctoral level, the university emphasizes advanced research and psychological assessment, psychotherapy, the biological bases of behavior and counseling and diagnosing learning problems.
