Child Clinical Psychology Programs

Clinical psychologists assess, diagnose and treat mental disorders. Those who specialize in child psychology work with children and adolescents who have mental disorders. They may work in mental health clinics, hospitals or schools, or they may enter into private practice. Individuals must obtain a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in child psychology to become qualified.

    • The University of Washington in Seattle, Tacoma and Bothell is one of the oldest state-supported higher education institutions of the West Coast. The university tied with the University of California, Los Angeles as the best graduate school for clinical psychology in the nation as reported by "U.S. News and World Report" in 2008. The UW Department of Psychology confers more than 400 bachelor degrees and 30 graduate degrees annually, including doctoral degrees in clinical psychology. Students may specialize in child clinical psychology, with coursework in child treatment, intelligence assessment and child assessment. Candidates typically complete the program in five to seven years, including a one-year clinical internship.

    University of Kansas

    • With 14 schools on eight campuses, the University of Kansas was ranked in the top 10 percent of 371 colleges ranked for strong academic and research programs by "Princeton Review" in 2010. The university's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the home of 55 departments and programs, including the Department of Psychology and its Clinical Child Psychology Program. The program leads to the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with a child emphasis and prepares students for entry-level training in clinical psychology with a focus on the assessment and treatment of children, adolescents and families. It also places a large emphasis on research. Full-time students typically complete the Clinical Child Psychology Program in four years, which includes a one-year predoctoral internship in addition to a master's thesis and doctoral dissertation.

    University of Alabama

    • The University of Alabama, Alabama's first public college, is the number one institution in the nation for the enrollment and graduation of minority doctoral students under the Southern Regional Education Board's Minority Doctoral Scholars Program (SREB). The doctoral program in Clinical Psychology offers concentration options in clinical health, psychology law, clinical geropsychology and clinical child psychology. The clinical child psychology concentration prepares students for careers as scientists and scientist practitioners and consists of major coursework in the study of children, adolescents and their families. It also focuses on conducting research on adolescent intervention and assessments. Students may also complete extra coursework specializing in in the area of child and adolescent forensic psychology.
