PSY-D Programs in Clinical Psychology

Doctor of psychology (PsyD) programs in clinical psychology use the practitioner-scholar model of psychology, which trains students first as clinical practitioners and second as professional scientists. This method of training opposes the traditional doctor of philosophy as many of these programs are primarily research oriented. Most doctor of psychology clinical psychology graduate programs have common components, such as the core coursework requirements, dissertation, clinical practicum courses and an additional yearlong internship. Many of these programs take anywhere from five to six years, on average, to complete.

    • Alliant International University has five APA-accredited doctor of psychology clinical psychology programs throughout California and one such program--nonaccredited--in Hong Kong, China. Each campus location offers slightly different experiences. The Hong Kong program integrates Western and Asian psychological theories and applications. Alliant's San Diego location offers generalist training in clinical psychology and allows students emphasis training in clinical assessment, family and child psychology, forensic and psychodynamic psychology; San Fransisco's campus offers specialization tracks (training beyond an emphasis area) in clinical and forensic work with children, adolescents and families. The Fresno and Sacramento campuses have emphasis areas in civil forensic, health and ecosystem child psychology. Students at these campuses also enroll in a dissertation course series, which helps students complete the program on time. Alliant's Los Angeles campus offers emphasis areas in clinical health, family and couple, and multicultural psychology. Alliant's Doctor of Psychology programs can be completed within four to five years.

    Chestnut Hill College

    • Chestnut Hill College offers an APA-accredited doctor of psychology program in clinical psychology that can be completed in six years and must be completed within eight years. Students can enter with a bachelor's or master's degree in psychology; students with bachelor's degrees receive the master's of science en route to the doctoral degree. Chestnut Hill's program uses psychodynamic and systems theories approaches to help students understand both the inner workings of human emotions, behaviors and how families and individuals influence each other. Students can choose an optional concentration in marriage and family therapy. The college enrolls around 20 to 25 students each year.

    Baylor University

    • Baylor University's APA-accredited doctor of psychology program was ranked as one of America's top graduate programs in 2005 by U.S. News & World Report. The program maintains a broad-based curriculum and gives students the chance to learn, understand and train in several models and theories of psychology, including the psychodynamic approach, cognitive behavioral therapy, humanistic, interpersonal and family systems approaches. Students receive extensive clinical experience; they enroll in two courses plus a practicum course each semester, which amounts to nearly 3,000 hours of preinternship training. Baylor maintains a small class size, admitting only about seven students each year; admission to the program is "highly competitive," according to the university.
