Industrial Psychology PhD Programs

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for industrial or organizational psychologists will increase by 26 percent from 2008 through 2018. Entry into the field typically requires a graduate-level degree in psychology. A number of private and public colleges in the United States offer Ph.D. programs in industrial psychology, preparing students to teach at the postsecondary level, conduct research or work for companies, assisting with tasks like improving worker morale or developing personality tests to better evaluate job applicants.
  1. Claremont Graduate University

    • Claremont Graduate University is a private, nonsectarian institution based in Claremont, California, approximately 35 miles east of Los Angeles. The university's Ph.D. program in psychology features a concentration in industrial and organization psychology. Students in the program complete coursework in research methods, statistics, organizational behavior, multiple regression and data analysis. All students either spend a semester teaching an undergraduate course under the supervision of a faculty member or a semester working in the field for a company or agency. After the completion of the experiential learning placement and the required coursework, students submit a portfolio of their work so far in the program and take an oral examination to test mastery of the concepts covered in the curriculum. Students whose portfolios are accepted and pass the examination then write a formal dissertation in an area of interest to them. All students admitted to the program receive funding, which covers all or part of their tuition and pays a monthly stipend.

    George Mason University

    • A public institution, George Mason University is in Fairfax, Virginia and serves as home to more than 32,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The college received the 143rd-place ranking among universities in the United States in the "Best Colleges 2011" ratings from "U.S. News and World Report." The college's Ph.D. program in industrial and organizational psychology includes coursework in cognitive and social psychology, research methods, psychometric analysis, personnel psychology, organizational and small group behavior and motivation. Students have the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses if they choose, and a dissertation is required for graduation. All students in the program receive full tuition funding and an annual stipend.

    • Founded in 1890, the Illinois Institute of Technology is a private, nonsectarian institution in Chicago with more than 7,700 undergraduate and graduate students. "U.S. News and World Report" ranked the college 111th among all universities in the United States in its "Best Colleges 2011" ratings. Students spend the first year in the colleges industrial psychology Ph.D. program assisting faculty in research positions. Coursework also begins during the first year with required classes including psychometric theory, personnel selection, statistics, training and organizational psychology. Students also complete two internships with human resources, personnel and training departments of Chicago-area companies and organizations prior to graduation. An independent research dissertation is also required. Need-based government loans and grants are available for students in the program, and the college offers a limited number of merit-based scholarships, assistantships and fellowships to help cover the cost of tuition.
