The department of theology within Boston College's College of Arts and Sciences offers a PhD program in theology with specializations in the history of Christian life and thought, systematic theology, biblical studies, theological ethics and comparative theology. Students can also complete a minor in any of those fields or in pastoral theology. PhD candidates must demonstrate proficiency in at least two languages.

Vanderbilt Divinity School offers doctoral degree programs in religion as well as theology and practice. The theology and practice program enrolls about 50 graduate students who work with 25 Vanderbilt faculty members and 20 ministers. The program grants five fellowships per year to PhD students in religion. Students can specialize in ethics and society, Hebrew Bible and Ancient Israel, historical studies, history and critical theories of religion, homiletics and liturgics, New Testament and early Christianity, religion, psychology and culture and theological studies.

Harvard University offers two doctoral degree programs in religion. The Divinity School offers a Doctor of Theology (ThD) degree program, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree program in the study of religion. Students in both programs study the literature, languages, practices and institutions of religious traditions. PhD candidates must be able to read in at least two languages, and ThD candidates must be able to demonstrate intermediate proficiency in Greek, Hebrew or Sanskrit.
