PhD in Counseling Programs

Earning a Ph.D. in counseling opens students up to a number of career possibilities. Students with a doctoral degree in counseling can work as school counselors, vocational counselors, mental health counselors and substance abuse counselors, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. After earning a Ph.D. in counseling, students can also pursue careers as marriage and family counselors. This wide-ranging and rewarding field will grow by 18 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is a rate faster than the national average.

Applicants must have a master's degree in counseling or a related field. The program takes three to five years after the master's degree.     George Mason University

    • George Mason University's Graduate School of Education offers a Ph.D. in counseling. Students must take 55 credits beyond the master's degree and write a dissertation.
