PhD Programs in Europe

In an increasingly globalized world, students are actively searching out graduate programs abroad to gain international experience and open doors. Indeed, studying for a higher-level degree in Europe gives students the benefit of experiencing the academic culture of a foreign country, while simultaneously sampling life in European society. And, of course, having a PhD from a European university on your resume certainly won't hurt your future job prospects.
  1. Oxford University

    • Oxford is distinguished for being the oldest university in the English-speaking world, with roots going back before the year 1100 (its exact foundation date is unknown). Since 1914, it has offered a D.Phil degree, which is the British equivalent to an American PhD. Some of Oxford's D.Phil programs include classical languages and literature, biochemistry, anesthetics and music. Pursuing a doctorate in the United Kingdom differs from the United States because the focus is on independent research, carried out under the supervision of a faculty member who shares your interests, rather than coursework. Typically, the degree takes three or four years to complete.

    Humboldt University

    • Humboldt University was the first university in Berlin, having been founded in 1810 as the University of Berlin. As an institution of higher learning, it has had a profound influence on the development of universities in Europe and the United States alike. Today, Humboldt offers a number of PhD programs geared towards international students. For instance, it is home to the Berlin School of Mind and Brain, a three-year PhD program that focuses on the interplay between the humanities (philosophy) and the neurosciences. Humboldt also offers PhD programs in English in ancient philosophy, socioeconomic and statistical studies, literature and gender studies.

    The European Graduate School

    • The European Graduate School is located in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, high up in the Alps, providing stunning views of the surrounding countryside. It is a limited residency program, wherein students are in residence for two three-week summer sessions. Throughout the academic year, they are expected to complete writing assignments based on assigned reading. For the summer residencies, students attend lectures by celebrated philosophers, artists, writers and filmmakers, including Judith Butler, Simon Critchley, Nicholson Baker and Agnes Varda. While the program itself is interdisciplinary with a range of study options in the humanities and social sciences, all students who complete the program receive a PhD in media and communication.
