Boston College

• Boston College's Carroll School of Management offers a PhD in finance. Students take 18 courses during the first two-and-a-half years in the program, learning about economics and finance. As students complete their coursework, they also work as research assistants and submit a research paper on their findings. Near the end of their second year in the program, students must pass a comprehensive exam before they begin work on the dissertation. Graduates of this program work as faculty at schools such as George Washington University and the University of Virginia.

University of Rhode Island

• The University of Rhode Island's Department of English offers a PhD. The admissions committee considers the student's ability to do scholarship and whether his research interests are specialized. Students complete 72 credits to earn the PhD---30 credits approved for master's work, 24 credits of coursework and 18 dissertation credits. Students also have the opportunity to work as teaching assistants in both literature and rhetoric.

University of Connecticut

• The University of Connecticut's Department of Community Medicine offers a PhD in public health. Students can choose from one of two concentrations---social and behavioral health sciences or occupational and environmental health sciences. Courses vary depending on the concentration, but sample courses include Public Health Seminar, Nutrition for Healthy Communities and Methods and Teachings of Education Research. Students must complete 45 credits to earn the degree, which includes discipline-specific courses and elective courses.

University of New Hampshire

• Doctoral students at the University of New Hampshire can earn a PhD in history through the school's College of Liberal Arts. Students can design a program to meet their research interests, but the department has to approve it. The school encourages doctoral students to teach as they study to prepare them for a career in scholarship and research. Sample courses include Cults and Charisma, African Religions and Readings in Modern American History.
