The City University of New York (CUNY) is one university with a well-established reputation in the sciences. In the field of chemistry, the PhD program is offered through a consortium of schools in the New York area that includes not only City University, but also York College, Brooklyn College, College of Staten Island, City College Queens College and Hunter College. Students get to choose which of these schools to conduct their research. Classes are taken at the CUNY Graduate Center.
The PhD program offered at CUNY offers a number sub-disciplines from which students can choose to specialize: analytical chemistry; molecular biophysics; inorganic chemistry; polymer chemistry; materials science and nanotechnology; physical chemistry; and organic chemistry.
Students in the graduate program at CUNY all benefit from a full-tuition waiver, a stipend to cover living expenses and health insurance. These benefits are provided for five full years of study.

A second option for a PhD in chemistry is the doctorate offered by the Department of Chemistry at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. One of the hallmarks of the Duke program is the fact that it offers sub-disciplines in the major areas of chemistry research such as theoretical chemistry, analytic chemistry, organic and inorganic chemistry and biological chemistry, while at the same time emphasizing interdisciplinary research in the field.
Interdisciplinary research often conducted by PhD students at Duke includes areas such as pharmacology, biologically inspired materials, toxicology and molecular biophysics. Graduates from Duke have been employed by prominent companies such as Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithCline, Proctor & Gamble and Pfizer.
The department offers a number of fellowships, teaching assistantships and research assistanships to help students fund the cost of their education and living expenses.

A third option for a PhD in chemistry is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT is world-renowned for its reputation in other science fields such as physics, and applied sciences and engineering. The field of chemistry is no different. MIT's graduate chemistry department was ranked No. 1 by "U.S. News & World Report" in 2010, tied with the University of California at Berkeley and the California Institute of Technology.
At MIT, PhD students do not pursue a formal plan of study, but rather devise their own under the direction of their faculty adviser. The program at MIT emphasizes interdisciplinary research in the field. Three primary interdisciplinary programs are offered through the MIT chemistry department: a program in polymer science and technology, biotechnology training and a chemistry biology interface training program.
