Northwestern University offers a Ph.D. in technology and social behavior, formed through a partnership of the university's School of Communication and School of Engineering and Applied Science. Students study the interaction between human behavior and computer technology and research topics such as interactive technologies and how they impact child development, and technologies to support distance collaboration. Students move through the programs in three phases by following a course schedule developed to complement their research interests, taking qualifying exams, and writing and defending their dissertation. Hands-on research is an integral part of this technology Ph.D. program.

Coursework prepares students for work in technology management positions in a variety of fields, faculty positions in higher education, and jobs in policy analysis and research.
