Master's of Theology Programs

Master's degrees in theology are designed to provide students with knowledge of the Bible in order to work as pastors, missionaries or in other areas of church leadership. Graduates of master's programs in theology develop an understanding of the history of theology and study Greek and Hebrew biblical texts. Some degree programs integrate missionary work into the curriculum.
  1. Dallas Theological Seminary

    • Students at Dallas Theological Seminary select from tracks in Bible translation and ministry. Both tracks require completion of 120 credits, and degree candidates complete internships relevant to the chosen track. The degree is designed to be completed in three or four years and the curriculum includes courses in Greek, Hebrew, evangelism, Christian counseling and church history. Bible translation students complete 18 credits related to the translation track, while ministry students can focus their studies on women's, children's or family life ministries. Several full-tuition scholarships are available to qualified students. Applicants to Dallas Theological Seminary submit references, undergraduate transcripts, and proof of church relationship.

    Loyola University Chicago

    • The master's program in theology at Loyola University Chicago offers several concentrations, including ethics, theological studies, biblical languages and biblical studies. Students can complete the degree on a full-time or part-time basis; full-time students finish their degrees in two years. There is no thesis requirement, but students must pass a comprehensive exam. Successful applicants have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better; in addition to college transcripts, prospective students submit three recommendation letters, standardized test scores and a personal statement.

    Emory University

    • Emory University's Master of Theology degree is designed for students who hold a Master of Divinity degree and wish to undertake in-depth study in a subject area such as ethics, preaching and worship or religious education. The 24-credit program must be completed with a 3.0 or better GPA and students are required to submit a major paper and pass an oral examination. Students are assigned an adviser who helps them to develop a program of study; the degree can be completed in one year and three credit hours may be transferred in from another academic institution.

    Talbot School of Theology

    • The Master of Arts degree in theology at Talbot School of Theology is designed to be completed in no more than five years. Students can select from a 64-credit thesis option or a 66-credit non-thesis option to complete the degree. Graduates of the master's degree program obtain an understanding of church history and Christian theology and gain doctoral-level research and writing skills. As part of the degree plan, students select from specializations in general or biblical language studies. The curriculum includes courses in theology, beginning Greek and Hebrew, along with a review of books of the Bible, including Acts and Revelation. Applicants submit undergraduate transcripts and a personal statement; a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required to be considered for admission to the program.
