Biochemistry Master's Programs

Biochemistry works hand in hand with the science, medical and mathematics fields, with coursework rich in chemistry and biology. This cutting-edge field attracts many talented graduate students, and a number of universities and colleges across the country now offer master's programs in biochemistry.
  1. Johns Hopkins University

    • Students at Johns Hopkins University's biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology program study an intense six-year course load. The program is medical based with students ending with a doctorate degree after completing their master's study. Along with the coursework, students must take part in three lab rotations as well as give an oral presentation and attend retreat events where faculty members give research lectures. Following their third lab rotation, all graduate students must declare a thesis. The required courses take place during the first and second year, while the remaining years involve graduate thesis work, doctoral thesis work, oral exams and elective courses.

    University of Arizona

    • The University of Arizona's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics offers graduate programs in biochemistry, general biology and applied bioscience. The department also features a five-year program where students earn both a bachelor's and master's degree in biochemistry. This five-year program includes classes covering genetics, cell regulation, nucleic acids and biological structure, among others. Before completing the program, students must finish a master's thesis. The biology program is tailored to future teachers and the bioscience program offers master of science degrees. Students have access to graduate fellowships to help with tuition and the program features a number of research labs to aid research.

    University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth

    • The University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth offers master of science degrees in biochemistry through its Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Students must complete 30 credit hours to earn their degrees. The program requires 18 of these credits to be in laboratory or lecture courses, while the remaining credits involve researching for the mandatory graduate thesis. The program also requires students to maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average. The department does offer non-thesis master's programs; however, these students are ineligible for assistantships. The program sets students on the path toward a future doctorate degree.
