Athletic Administration Master's Programs

Students interested in athletics and business can pursue a master's degree in athletic administration, often known as sport administration. These programs introduce students to the business side of athletics and prepare them for careers as athletic directors or athletic department staff at the high school and collegiate levels. Careers in athletic event management, public relations and fund-raising also are options for students who earn this degree.
  1. Gonzaga University

    • Gonzaga University's Master of Arts in sport and athletic administration exposes students to an interdisciplinary education. Students take 34 credits over six semesters and participate in an internship for at least 300 hours. Internship opportunities range from positions at the school's fitness center or athletic department to jobs with local professional sports teams.

      Courses include Sport and Athletic Promotions, Sport Finance and Sport and Athletics in the Social Context. The program includes 30 to 40 students, and students have to stay on campus for at least one summer semester. Graduates of this program earned jobs at professional sports teams, recreational resorts and health and fitness clubs.

    Ohio University

    • Ohio University offers an accredited master's degree in athletic administration exclusively online. The university developed this program in conjunction with the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association to prepare students to become leaders in athletics. Specifically, the program aims to help students prepare to become an athletic director of a college athletic department.

      Course topics include sports marketing and finance, risk management and administration of college athletic programs, according to the school's website. Although students take their classes online, they come to campus to participate in a three- to four-day Athletic Leadership Workshop during their first semester of enrollment. The program takes about two years to complete.

    Indiana University

    • Indiana University offers a Master of Science in athletic administration. The program focuses on the "management principles of planning, organizing, leading and directing to the unique industry of commercial sport," according to the school's website.

      Courses include Issues in Commercial Sport, The Role of Sports in Society and Governance in Sport Management. The program prepares students for roles in sports information, professional sports management, event and facility management and collegiate athletic administration.
