Occupational Therapist Master's Programs in Illinois

Occupational therapists work with patients with physical, mental and emotional problems to improve their life and work skills, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. A master's degree is the minimum educational requirement to begin a career in occupational therapy, and several Illinois universities offer graduate programs in OT. Because the need for occupational therapists will grow by 26 percent between 2008 and 2018, earning a master's degree in the field can lead to a promising, secure career.

    • The University of Illinois at Chicago offers a Master of Science in occupational therapy through its College of Applied Health Sciences. Students attend the program full time and take a minimum of 74 credits. Courses include development of a therapeutic self, human structure and function and occupational performance in adults and adolescents. Students can complete the course-only option of 74 credits in two years. Some students can choose to complete a thesis or project for an additional 4 to 16 credits to enhance their understanding of occupational therapy. In addition, students participate in fieldwork in which they practice the theories they have learned in a clinical setting.

    Rush University

    • Located in Chicago, Rush University offers a master's program in occupational therapy. Students complete 117 credits to earn the degree, which usually takes two years on the quarter-semester system. Courses include OT history and philosophy, human structure and principles of movement, health care in America and psychosocial dysfunction. Students also take research credit hours and participate in fieldwork to gain hands-on, practical experience in OT.

    Midwestern University

    • The master's of occupational therapy program at Midwestern University takes 27 months to complete on a full-time basis. The school admits only 38 students to the program annually and has placed 100 percent of its students in full-time positions upon graduation. Students must complete such prerequisite courses as anatomy, physiology and statistics before moving into the OT curriculum. In addition to coursework, students participate in fieldwork in pediatric, in-patient rehabilitation and outpatient rehabilitation settings. Graduates of the program often find work in schools, home health care organizations and senior living facilities.
