Arizona State University, located in Tempe, is the first university to offer a trans-disciplinary master's in sustainability. This program emphasizes economic, social and environmental considerations in sustainability, and students work hands-on with local environmental leaders and situations to develop an in-depth understanding of course material. Established in 2007, this program is a member of the Global Institute of Sustainability.

Harvard University, a private university in downtown Boston, Massachusetts, offers a master's program in sustainability and environmental management. Students study with environmental leaders in the community and surrounding area, and have the opportunity to research international environmental issues through internships and study abroad programs. Students may enroll in a thesis track, which requires nine courses and a thesis for a total of 40 credits, or a capstone track, which requires 11 courses and a capstone course, for a total of 48 credits.

The University of South Florida, located in Tampa, offers a master's in global sustainability. This program emphasizes global, cultural and geographic concerns for environmental sustainability, and students also study the role the economy, government and society plays in preserving the environment. Students work hands-on with trained professionals in the community. The program is 33-semester hours, culminating in a master's in global sustainability, and many courses may be taken in-person or online.
