Master's Degree Programs in Sweden

English speakers looking to obtain their master's degree should not rule out studying in Sweden as a possibility. According to the Sweden institute, the country's universities offer more than 600 master's programs among them. Students with at least three years of higher education in Sweden or an international equivalent (180 credit bachelor's program) are able to apply for programs divided into seven subject areas.
  1. Technology

    • There are 249 master's programs in technology offered throughout Sweden, making it the largest subject area of the seven. Nearly 30 of the country's higher education institutes offer technology-based courses of study, with some of the technological institutes offering as many as 50 (or more) programs. Degrees include all manner of computer science, communication systems, fire safety engineering, and food technology and nutrition at schools such as KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Lund University.

    Business and Social Sciences

    • Business and social sciences constitute a diverse category of more than 100 programs, ranging from accounting to welfare policies and management. Those looking to focus on anthropology, hospitality, management, marketing, media, journalism, and geography, all from a business-minded perspective, can all find their place at such schools as Stockholm University, the University of Gothenburg, and Karlstad University.

    Natural Science

    • Another subject area including more than 100 degree programs is the field of natural science. These are notably specific programs, with more than 20 degrees devoted to different areas of biology. Other main subject areas, each with its own subdivisions of programs, include chemistry, earth sciences, and physics. Key universities offering these programs are Lund University and the University of Stockholm; the latter has 38 natural science degrees on its own.

    Fine Arts

    • Fine arts studies in Sweden are much more limited than technology, business and social sciences, or natural science. But the programs are still varied. In addition to master's studies in studio art specializations, music, fashion marketing, and storytelling, there are several design degrees, including specialties such as jewelry and corpus, textile/garments, furniture, and iron and steel.

    Health and Medicine

    • Health and medicine is another somewhat limited field in terms of Swedish master's degrees. The Karolinska Institutet specializes in public health, toxicology, bioentrepreneurship, and biomedicine. Other options at other schools include medical nuclide techniques at Uppsala University and integrative health science at Kristianstad University College.

    Humanities

    • Cinema studies, the religious roots of Europe, library science, and world Englishes all fall under the category of humanities in Swedish education. There are 44 different humanities degree programs, divided among 10 different schools, at the University of Stockholm and Uppsala University.

    Interdisciplinary Studies

    • Finally, interdisciplinary studies fuse multiple subject areas, making for a well-rounded understanding of how those subjects connect and overlap. In Sweden there are 15 different schools offering 36 total interdisciplinary master's degrees. One example is Södertörn University's program of environmental science, communication, and decision-making.
