Master Degree Programs in Economics

A master's degree in economics can qualify you to work in governmental organizations or in private business, and it can also be a stepping stone toward a doctorate. In the United States there are at least 228 campus-based master's programs in economics (and related subjects) and 23 distance-learning programs (see "Resources").
  1. Northeastern University

    • Northeastern is located in the lively college town of Boston, Massachusetts.

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Northeastern offers an eight-course master's program in Applied Economic Policy Analysis, which attracts about 20 new students each year. It is possible to complete this program on a part-time basis. According to the university, the most distinctive aspect of their graduate economics program is "an emphasis on applied economics, coupled with attention to providing a solid grounding in microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, and econometrics." In the second half of the program, qualified students may take advantage of Northeastern's unique co-op program, which allows you to work as an economist while pursuing your degree.

    University of Oklahoma

    • The University of Oklahoma offers a master's in economics program with two tracks: "applied" and "managerial." The applied economics track is "designed for students seeking jobs in either the private or public sectors" or for those who might wish to pursue a Ph.D. The managerial track is a terminal degree "for those students who expect to pursue a managerial career in business or government and prefer a course of study that emphasizes the applications of economics to the problems of these areas." All students are required to take a "core" examination mid-program and a comprehensive examination at the end of their studies.
