For nurses who want to further their education with graduate studies in Canada, narrowing down an area of interest is the first step in picking a place to study. Various universities across Canada offer Master of Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing degrees, allowing students to become advanced practitioners in the areas of research, clinical practice or administration.
  1. University of Windsor

    • The University of Windsor, located in Windsor, Ontario, offers two graduate nursing programs: the Master of Science degree, and the Master of Nursing degree. The M.Sc. requires nursing students to complete six courses as well as a thesis, while the M.N. consists of six courses, plus four electives in place of a thesis. The two areas of specialization that students in either program may choose from are advanced clinical nursing or nursing leadership.

    University of British Columbia

    • The University of British Columbia school of nursing offers graduate students a Master of Nursing-Nurse Practitioner degree. The two-year program combines theory courses with clinical practice and aims to give students the eligibility they need to become licensed nurse practitioners in British Columbia.     • Dalhousie University, located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, offers a two-phase Master of Nursing program. The first phase consists of practice-based required courses and electives with specializations in adult health, community health, mental health, maternal child health and nursing families with ill children.     • The University of Toronto, located in Toronto, Ontario, offers three graduate nursing programs: the Master of Nursing degree, the combined Master of Nursing and Master of Health Science (Health Administration) degree and the Doctor of Philosophy degree. The three areas of specialization that M.N. students can choose from are nursing administration, clinical nursing or nurse practitioner. The combined M.N./M.H.Sc. (Health Administration) is a two-and-a-half-year, integrated program of study for students who wish to pursue both nursing and health administration.

      The Doctor of Philosophy program allows students to choose from one of three research areas: nursing science of healthy individuals, families and communities; nursing science of individuals and families experiencing acute and chronic illness; or science of nursing administration.
