Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro is Tennessee’s second largest university with an enrollment of more than 25,000 students. Within the MTSU School of Nursing, students can obtain a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree in nursing or enroll in one of the school’s graduate programs.
MTSU offers a Master’s of Science in Nursing that allows students to focus on advanced practice, nursing administration, nursing education or health-care informatics. The Tennessee Board of Regents and the Tennessee Board of Nursing approve the program.
Graduate nursing programs also are available to students with a bachelor’s degree in related sciences, mathematics, business or engineering. The Master of Science in Professional Science is a program within the School of Nursing that focuses either on biotechnology, statistics or health-care informatics.

Vanderbilt University in Nashville is one of the most prestigious schools in Tennessee. \"U.S. News and World Report\" ranked the private university in the Top 20 Best Colleges in 2010. The Vanderbilt School of Nursing offers four graduate nursing programs as well as a selection of postgraduate certifications.
The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is designed to produce advanced-practice nurses and is open to students with bachelor’s level nursing or non-nursing degrees. The Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics (MS) prepares students for work as dietitians who provide nutritional care to their patients. The program allows for an option of two tracks based on interest. These track options include nutrition management in health-care systems and nutrition informatics.
In addition to the master’s level programs, Vanderbilt offers a PhD in Nursing Science as well as a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). The PhD prepares students for a career in teaching and research on the university level, and the DNP will prepare students for a career of bringing evidence-based practice into a clinical setting.

Located in west Tennessee, the University of Memphis is the largest school in the region. In addition to the university’s two undergraduate nursing degrees, the Loewenberg School of Nursing also has a graduate Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) program.
Loewenberg’s MSN program offers students a wide array of concentration focus options during its educational experience. Students can choose between nursing administration, nursing education, family nurse practitioner and nursing informatics. Those wishing to practice as a family nurse practitioner may also complete the FNP Post-Master’s Certificate at the university to complete the national certification exam.

The University of Tennessee in Knoxville has been graduating students from its nursing programs since 1974. The university has the largest enrollment in the state and offers the widest selection of concentrations in its graduate nursing program.
The master's program at UT allows students to concentrate on a variety of specific nursing fields including administration, adult health, family nurse practitioner, homeland security, mental health, nurse anesthesia or women and children. These concentrations will prepare nurses to deliver care in diverse medical settings.
The school also offers a PhD program in nursing. The Doctoral Nursing degree is aimed at those who wish to continue their education beyond the master's level and become faculty or administrators at the university level.
