Tennessee Nursing Colleges

Tennessee is home to a number of universities that offer nursing programs leading to associate, bachelor's, master's or doctoral degrees. Many health-care organizations are experiencing a shortage of nurses, so a degree in nursing will serve applicants well in obtaining employment.
  1. East Tennessee State University

    • East Tennessee State University is located in Johnson City, in the northeastern tip of the state. The college offers undergraduate programs leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Certificate and master's programs are available through the Regents Online Degree Program (RODP). Many of the nursing programs involve students in hands-on experience at local hospitals and health-care facilities.

    Tennessee State University

    • Tennessee State University, located in Nashville, offers associate, bachelor and master degrees. Students in the Bachelor of Science program learn nursing concepts, how to analyze health problems, how to communicate with clients from a diverse background and how to be a significant contributor to health care in the community. The school also offers a Master of Science in Nursing program, with three concentrations offered--family nurse practice, nursing education and holistic nursing.

    University of Tennessee

    • The College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee is located in Knoxville. It was established in July 1971 and it has an enrollment of almost 600 students in undergraduate, master's and doctoral degree nursing programs. The college partners with local hospitals and laboratories to provide hands-on experience for students. It also offers students experience interacting with a variety of patient populations. Some students travel to villages in Central and South America, while others work in needy communities in the United States.

    Vanderbilt University

    • The School of Nursing at Vanderbilt University is located in Nashville. It is ranked as one of the top 20 nursing schools in the country by U.S. News & World Report. The school offers a Masters of Science in Nursing, a Doctor of Nursing Practice program, a PhD in Nursing Science, post-masters certificates and a postdoctoral program as well as continuing education. Students can also earn graduate credits without being involved in a specific graduate program.
