Virginia Nursing Colleges

From state universities to small colleges, Virginia offers nursing students a wide range of educational opportunities. There are 21 community colleges, 15 public and private universities or colleges, and several schools within public hospitals or learning centers that offer nursing degrees. The largest schools with nursing programs include the University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, Northern Virginia Community College and George Mason University. Nursing degrees range from bachelor's to doctorate level programs.
  1. Old Dominion University School of Nursing

    • Located in Norfolk, Virginia, the School of Nursing at Old Dominion University offers two professional nursing degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). The BSN program has offerings for pre- and post-licensure students and can be completed in an accelerated or traditional time frame. Old Dominion also offers courses in an online format. The MSN program prepares graduates for advanced practice nursing and leadership positions and includes career tracks such as Nurse Educator and Family Nurse Practitioner. These courses are also available online. In addition to classroom studies, undergraduates also participate in clinical practicums in a variety of settings.

    Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing

    • Located in the state capital of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing offers programs at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The School of Nursing was founded in 1893 and offers both classroom lectures and clinical and simulation laboratories. Students gain patient care experience in hospitals, community clinics and physician offices. Undergraduate course offerings include health assessment for nursing practice, concepts of nursing and fundamental nursing courses. Partnering with the VCU Medical Center, the nursing school is dedicated to patient care and safety, nursing research, teaching and community service.

    George Mason University School of Nursing

    • Located in Northern Virginia, the George Mason School of Nursing offers nursing students undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. The undergraduate curriculum qualifies nursing students to complete their licensure while the master's program features career tracks such as Nurse Practitioner and Nursing Administration. In addition to didactic, seminar learning and clinical practice, nursing students can also experience virtual models in GMU's simulation laboratories--providing hands-on, clinical learning in a controlled environment.
